So recently, Thrivecart announced that they were introducing a new course platform, Learn, and making it free for all Thrivecart customers. I couldn’t have been more excited as this means a saving of $1344 per year for me – no more recurring course platform fees and I could ditch my expensive Zapier subscription.

But it also meant that I could start integrating my Convertboxes with my course lessons, something that I had to pay to upgrade to the next subscription plan to achieve with Podia. (Another $480 a year!)

Being able to integrate Convertbox and Learn is a total game-changer.

I can use it to increase student engagement, promote related products and encourage students to give feedback, testimonials or join my affiliate program.

So I wrote this article to help anyone getting started with Learn to integrate their own pop-up messages onto their course lessons using Convertbox.

But before we get stuck into how you can achieve this and the ways you can use pop-ups, let’s quickly cover what Convertbox and Learn both are for anyone new to either product.

What is Convertbox?

Convertbox is a tool that lets you deliver personalised notifications to your audience at opportune times.

It allows you to create both pop-up messages as well as inline forms and notifications.

But Convertbox stands out from other similar pop-up notification tools for a number of reasons.

  • Convertboxes are actually pretty. No ugly pop-ups here. There’s heaps of customisation options too.
  • You can use Convertbox on multiple domains – including course platforms and checkout carts! You only pay once but can use it on any domain you own.
  • You have a lot of control about when pop-ups show and to whom.
  • Convertbox integrates with your email service provider so that you can either add tags when someone completes a form or you can choose to only show your Convertbox to people with or without a tag. Therefore if you are promoting another course, you can stop it showing to people who have the purchased course tag. You could then show them something different.
  • Convertbox can predict exit intent on mobile devices – not all pop-up tools are capable of this. This is ppwerful because pop-ups on mobiles can be annoying if they obstruct content so ideally all mobile pop ups would occur on exit intent. With other tools, many choose to turn off mobile pop ups all toegther which means missing out on over 50% of oppoprtunities. You don’t have to miss out with Convertbox.
  • It’s super easy to use. I previously used Thrive Leads and it was a headache so I rarely botheres and missed opportunities. But I can create a Convertbox in under 5 minutes.
  • You can quickly and easily create A/B tests by duplicating your Convertbox, changing the copy, images, colours, buttons, forms etc and then Convertbox will cycle through them both and display the conversion stats so you know which converts more effectively.
  • Convertbox is currently a one-time-only fee meaning no ongoing subscriptions and potential huge savings.

Whilst I purchased Convertbox initially as a way to generate email leads, I have gone on to use it in a number of creative ways helping me to

  1. Grow my email list
  2. Promote time sensitive offers
  3. Promote time limited offers on sales pages for first time visitors
  4. Promote affiliate products and affiliate bonuses
  5. Create quizzes
  6. Increase student engagement
  7. Gain testimonials, feedback and new affiliates
  8. Reduce cart abandonments

What is Thrivecart?

Thrivecart is the cart platform that I use. It is developed by the same team behind Convertbox.

Thrivecart offers a lot of flexibility for product owners to create full sales pages or pop up or embedded carts for their own sales pages hosted elsewhere

Where Thrivecart excels is at upsells. You can add bumps (soon multiple bumps,) upsells and downsells to every product increasing your overall cart value.

Thrivecart also allows you to run an all-singing all-dancing affiliate program with some cool features like being able to reward affiliates who hit certain targets by increasing their commissions or sending them an email with a bonus.

I was a massive fan of Thrivecart well before Learn was introduced but it just got even better…

What is Learn?

Learn is the course platform Thrivecart has introduced which is completely free to Thrivecart customers.

They also have an upgraded version called Learn + which has a heap of advanced course features that you can unlock for a one-time-only fee of $195.

The basic version of Learn is absolutely fine for new course owners, starting from scratch. But established course owners will probably want to upgrade to Learn + to access features like

  • Mass customer import
  • Advanced sequences
  • Bundles
  • Team access
  • Custom domains
  • Featured lessons
  • Being able to open up certain modules to students with specific tags such as early birds or student s enrolled via a specific affiliate.

What I really love about using Learn is that there are so many ways to customise your course and create a really interactive learning platform.

Because it integrates so smoothly with your checkout cart, there will be no issues with zaps failing and if someone defaults on a payment, their access to the course will be paused automatically.

*Please note that Learn is not currently listed on the sales page but it IS available to anyone who purchases Thrivecart and you will gain access straight away inside your dashboard!

Okay so now we’re all caught up on what each of these tools is, let’s dig into how we can use them effectively together. Let’s start with the tech first…

How to add Convertboxes to Learn Courses

You will first need to open Convertbox and click on your domain in the top right corner.

Click manage sites and then add a new site.

Add your Thrivecart domain address here.

If you don’t know it, have a look at one of your product URLs in Thrivecart. It’s the part before your product name and should look like yourid.thrivecart.com.

Next, create the Convertbox that you want to show on your course page.

Once you have created your Convertbox, navigate to Display and set your trigger and frequency.

Now select which pages you want this Convertbox to show on.

This will be your course page URL from Learn so visit your course as a student and grab the URL from the lesson. If you want it to show on multiple lessons, grab the URL for the course.

Navigate back to your Convertbox and choose this exact URL and paste your course lesson URL.

Alternatively, choose URLs starting with and paste your course URL.

Next, complete the targeting and launch details.

Now activate your Convertbox.

There is just one final step to go.

Click on the drop-down next to your name in the top right corner. Click installation and select option 2.

Copy the script in the box there.

Navigate back to Learn and click to edit the lesson where you want your Convertbox to show.

Add an HTML block at the top of your lesson and paste the code here.

Congrats, your Convertbox will now be working on your course pages!

Types of Convertbox you can use with your Learn courses

1. Time sensitive upsells.

Want to promote the next logical step in your funnel? You can create time-sensitive upsells where the student has a certain timeframe to make a decision after joining your course.

You’ll want this pop up to show on any lesson as it is time sensitive so on the display settings, choose under location ‘URL’s starting with’ and insert your course URL rather than the URL of a specific page.

You will need to make sure the Convertbox HTML is installed on each page inside your course.

2. Take action prompts to improve engagement and course completion.

These pop-ups could encourage your students to download a workbook, take a quiz, seek an accountability buddy etc.

You will likely want these pop-ups to show on specific pages only so be very clear about your display URLs

3. Promote related courses

If you have another course which you think the same customer would be interested in, you can showcase it.

Make sure you set this only to show when they have been engaging well with your course – e.g. repeat sessions. Also, make sure you exclude anyone with the purchase tag inside your emails service provider.

(Make sure you allow your ESP to integrate with your Thrivecart domain so that you have this option.)

4. Promote affiliate bonuses

If you mention specific tools or resources either in specific lessons or inside your resources section, you may want to highlight any affiliate bonuses that you offer.

Make sure you only show these Convertboxes on highly relevant pages.

5. Promote your Facebook group or customer community platform

Encourage your students to join your community by reminding them that it exists. This Convertbox could theoretically show on any page but you probably want to target those who have recently joined the course to help kick start their progress.

6. Upsell your one-on-one coaching

Get students to take the next step and book one-on-one coaching with you. You could also consider offering a small discount for existing customers.

You will want this pop up to only show when someone has been engaging well with your course e.g. repeat visits so set the targeting rules to target only those with multiple sessions.

7. Ask for feedback

Gather testimonials and feedback forms on autopilot by asking students to give their feedback via a form. I use Airtable for this. In fact, my testimonial hub is included in The Digital Product Boss System

You will want to only target those who have engaged with your content on several occasions as these are the people most likely to be willing to share their opinion. You don’t want to be showing this to brand new customers on their first visit!

8. Promote your affiliate program

Remind your students that you have an affiliate program and that they can earn money by referring their friends/audience your way.

I like to set this as a ribbon reminder that shows when they have engaged with multiple pages or returned to visit the course multiple times.

9. Create a quiz

Quizzes are coming soon directly inside Learn but if you’re in a rush to add a quiz or if you want to add a conditional logic quiz (I imagine the quiz function inside Learn will likely be score based,) then Convertbox could be a great way to do that.

Consider creating a conditional logic quiz for quiding someone with purchase decisions on your resources page. For example, if your course teaches email marketing, you could add a quiz to your resources page called ‘which is the right email service provider for you?’ The answer buttons will be affiliate links! (Don’t forget to disclose all affiliate links.)

10. Gather information

Use your Convertboxes to gather information about your students such as establishing what level of experience they have with your topic. This can help you to alter your positioning if you realise you are attracting more beginners than you realised or vice versa.

Set the convertbox to close when someone clicks a button. You can then keep an eye on the results by looking at the boxes stats.

11. Promote flash sales

Having a flash sale? Make sure you let your most engaged audience know about it – your current students!

Add a ribbon notification to all pages of your courses with a timer and link to your sales page.

Perfect for Black Friday!

Under location, choose URL’s starting with and put your course URL in. It should look like this:

https://domain-name.thrivecart.com/l/

This will make it show on all pages that have the Convertbox html added. (Unfortunately not the home page as there’s no way to add html here yet!)

Then for the timer, set it to stop showing when the countdown reaches zero.
