What is Convertbox?

Convertbox is a tool that helps you create beautiful and effective popup notifications on your website to help you grow your email list faster, engage your audience, promote affiliate campaigns and sell more products.

It’s simple to use, personalises messages and is far more effective and reader-friendly than the ugly, annoying pop-ups you are probably reluctant to use.

I’m actually a little obsessed with this tool and am always finding new ways to make it work for me and my business.

What I love most about it is that it communicates directly with my email marketing platform.

(I use Convertkit but it integrates with most platforms.)

So someone who lands on my site for the first time is going to get offered a freebie as a lead magnet. If they navigate away without joining my email list, I may never see them again so converting them to a subscriber is a priority.

However, if someone is already on my email list will receive something completely different. Getting them to sign up for another lead magnet doesn’t really help me.

Now I want to convert them from a subscriber to a customer. So with Convertkit, I can promote a product (mine or an affiliate product) that I know they are going to be interested in based on which tags they have inside Convertkit (my email marketing platform.)

If someone has already purchased one of my products, I don’t want to be advertising it to them every time they land on my site. But by using a purchased tag, I can set Convertbox to show an affiliate offer or a different product instead.

Clever, right?!

I can even set my notifications to include their name if they are already a subscriber.

You might be worried about pop-ups annoying your audience?

Yeah, I was too – before Convertbox

But I saw it on someone else’s site and found myself thinking ‘if only all pop-ups looked that beautiful!’

And then I learned just how much control you have over Convertbox displays. I tend to only use them on super related pages and when the person has spent a long time engaging with my content or when they are showing exit intent.

The type of annoying pop up which fills the screen, is difficult to minimize and appears instantly when you and on the page is NOT cool.

But with Convertbox I can create beautiful designs which don’t annoy my readers and display genuinely useful information to them.

Currently, I use Convertbox for the following purposes

  • Promoting my own products on related articles.
  • Promoting freebies/lead magnets to increase email sign ups.
  • Promoting time-limited special offers on product pages to encourage potential customers to take action.
  • Promoting flash sales for affiliate products on related articles. I schedule these in advance for the flash sale dates.
  • Promoting my own flash sales on digital products
  • Promoting my bonus products when someone uses my affiliate link to purchase a product
  • Creating quizzes for lead generation, information gathering AND for promoting affiliate products by helping guide purchase decisions.
  • To help guide new visitors around my site.

It has really helped me to grow my lists, increase digital product sales but also increase affiliate sales too.

I have tracked the results on a few articles on my travel blog and I know that Convertbox actually made me at least an extra $500 in a few months in affiliate commissions alone.

Not bad eh?!

(See the travel Convertboxes I’ve been tracking below…)

What is Thrivecart?

Thrivecart is my go-to tool for selling products.

It is essentially software that enables you to promote and to take money for your digital products, physical products or services.

But it is so much more than a simple cart processor.

Firstly, it has lots of profit boosters designed to help you make more money per sale.

This includes product bumps, free trials, one-click upsells and one-click downsells.

The picture below shows a bump example with the affiliate program master list on the left side…

In my first year with Thrivecart; bumps, upsells and downsells increased my sales by an extra $3314 that I may not have earned with a different cart processor.

Thrivecart also helps you automate absolutely everything in your business from expiring credit card reminders to chasing late payments and following up with those who abandoned their cart.

Thrivecart also runs an amazing affiliate program allowing you to increase sales by getting affiliates to promote it for you.

Yes, other cart processors have affiliate programs but they tend to be very basic. Thrivecarts program is designed to really motivate and help your affiliates to have success.

From helping your affiliates access promotional graphics and swipe copy to adding them to motivational email sequences with promotion ideas or upgrading their commissions when they reach certain targets.

I have yet to find better software for running an affiliate program!

And it pays off.

I didn’t really have much time to focus on recruiting affiliates in the last year but I still earned an extra $3039 via affiliate sales of my products.

So if it wasn’t for having Thrivecart, I would have likely earned $6353 less in the last 6 months.

Thrivecart has paid for itself many many times over! Over 9 times to be exact…

Why should you integrate Convertbox with Thrivecart?

No matter how beautiful your checkout page is or how persuasive your testimonials are, you are going to have abandoned carts from time to time.

Your customer gets distracted or starts to doubt their purchase decision, whatever the reason is, you are going to get some!

But the goal is to keep the number of abandoned carts to a bare minimum.

Using Convertbox with Thrivecart you can achieve that.

You can actually have Convertboxes pop up on your Thrivecart checkout pages.

If you set your boxes to pop up on exit intent, then you may be able to save some sales!

Step by step instructions for how to integrate Thrivecart with Convertbox

So how do you actually integrate Thrivecart with Convertbox?

It’s actually very simple.

You will first need to open Convertbox and click on your domain in the top right corner.

Click manage sites and then add a new site.

Add your Thrivecart domain address here.

If you don’t know it, have a look at one of your product URLs in Thrivecart. It’s the part before your product name and should look like yourid.thrivecart.com.

Next, create your Convertbox that you want to show when someone tries to abandon your checkout page.

Once you have created your Convertbox, navigate to Display and set your trigger and frequency.

Now select which pages you want this Convertbox to show on.

This will be your product URL from Thrivecart so copy and paste this over. Make sure you choose the EXACT URL.

Next, complete the targeting and launch details.

I recommend targeting just those on desktop.

Convertbox does have ways of predicting exit intent on mobile devices but it’s not likely to be as accurate as on desktop and you don’t want to distract people who are still interacting with your checkout page! Hence why I stick to desktop users.

Now activate your Convertbox.

There is just one final step to go.

Click on the drop-down next to your name in the top right corner. Click installation and select option 2.

Copy the script in the box there.

Navigate back to Thrivecart to your product settings and go to checkout-tracking-custom.

Paste your custom script into that box and click ‘Save and get URL.’

Congrats, your Convertbox will now be working on your checkout pages!

So let’s talk about what sort of Convertboxes you could use…

3 best ways to use Thrivecart and Convertbox together

As I mentioned previously, the main goal here is to avoid people from abandoning their cart as it’s likely they will not return to make the purchase if they lose momentum.

So here are three of the best ways you can use Convertbox with Thrivecart to reduce cart abandonments.

1. Showcase a walkthrough video

One of the common reasons people abandon a cart is that they are not sure if the product is a good fit for them.

So show them what they are missing by showing them a video of behind the scenes.

I use the free tool Vimeo for this.

I opt to record my screen with audio-only.

I then open up my course/toolkit or ebook as a customer and film myself talking through what’s inside and what to expect.

If your product is an online course then you might take a look at one of your lessons, the curriculum or take a closer look at the workbook.

Once you have created and downloaded your video, you need to add it to a Convertbox.

To do this, you will need to first upload your video to Youtube. You can set it to private so no one stumbles across your video by accident if you prefer.

Upload a thumbnail image. I create mine in Canva and if you grab my templates by using my affiliate links for Convertbox or Thrivecart, you’ll also get my Canva cover image template.

Now view your video and click share and get embed code.

Grab your embed code and head back to your Convertbox video and paste it there. I recommend using centre modal pop-ups so that it can’t be ignored but it’s still easy to navigate back to the checkout page by closing the box.

Our goal with this Convertbox is to get them back on side and purchasing your product. So select the button action to just close your Convertbox.

2. Promote a downsell

In this option, you are acknowledging that the person has realised the product isn’t right for them, possibly as they cannot afford it.

So instead offer them a more affordable option with a downsell.

This should be a product that is related to the topic but that is also cheaper.

So for example, if your main product is a course, your downsell could be an ebook on the same topic.

You can also opt to add a time-limited discount for your downsell.

I set mine for 5 minutes and the button to explore the downsell redirects to the downsell product checkout with a coupon code already applied.

I have 2 buttons. The other closes the Convertbox and takes them back to the original product. But this isn’t necessary and I would play around with A/B testing to see what works best!

3. Survey WHY your customer is navigating away.

This option is less about capturing an initial sale and more about improving your product or your sales strategy.

By asking a simple question, you can narrow down what is putting most of your customers off purchasing.

(You will be able to review answers by checking out your Convertbox stats and seeing which button got clicked most!)

If you add an extra ‘step’ inside Convertbox, you can thank them for their feedback and tell them how to get in touch with you if they have more questions or feedback.

2 Alternative things you can do with Convertbox and Thrivecart

Whilst the three options above are probably my preferred options, there are two other options I thought of.

Firstly, you could create a Convertbox promoting a freebie to get them on your email list.

You won’t earn any money today (unless you have a tripwire set up) but you will make sure that you have a way to stay in touch.

It might be that they just don’t know you well enough to have the confidence that your product is a good fit. But if you get them onto your email list, they will grow to know, like and trust you.

It’s very possible they will return to your cart checkout page another day especially if your email funnels are fully optimised!

The final option is that instead of offering a downsell, you could promote a cart abandonment discount to get them across the line.

To be honest this is my least favourite idea as it doesn’t quite sit right with me as it seems to be punishing your most proactive customers by them missing out on a discount!

But you have to decide what works best for you and your audience.

I’ll personally be sticking to the first three ideas and possibly the lead magnet on occasions.

Make sure you test the different options.

In Convertbox, it works by choosing the first relevant Convertbox on your list so drag your boxes around to place them in the order of priority.

If you have each Convcertbox set to only show once then if they return to the cart and show signs of exiting again, the next type of Convertbox will be shown to them.

Alternatively, you could use the same Convertbox and split test your different options to see which is more effective.

How to get Convertbox templates for the integration with Thrivecart

To make things as simple as possible for you, I have created some Convertbox templates for you for all 3 of my favourite abandoned cart options. It also includes a Canva template for your video cover image.

I am making these templates available as a free bonus when you join either Convertbox or Thrivecart via my affiliate link.

To claim your bonus, use any of my affiliate links in this article to purchase and then send your invoice as proof to leanne(at)passiveincomesuperstars.com. I will then send you your templates as a thank you!

Both Thrivecart and Convertbox have a really good lifetime discount available at the moment. I’m often asked when the offer is ending and the truth is, I have absolutely no idea. It might be gone tomorrow or in a few months.

So I recommend grabbing them both whilst you can. I’m pretty positive you won’t regret it!

Have you got any other suggestions for how you can use Convertbox and Thrivecart together?

I am sure there are many more ways I haven’t considered yet.

I feel like I am only scratching the surface with both tools right now – I’m constantly learning new ways to use them. I’d love to hear about ways you’ve discovered work effectively! Let us know in the comments!
