Creating digital products can be a very lucrative passive income stream yet many bloggers shy away from it, convinced that they won’t make any sales.

It’s a common misconception that you can only make money with digital products if you are in the blogging about blogging niche. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

(In fact, if anything, it’s an oversaturated market and not easy to crack these days!)

But to put my money where my mouth is, I asked some of the successful bloggers inside my community about the digital products they have created.

I conducted some mini interviews with successful digital product owners in a real variety of niches from art & design to food and travel.

Many are having great success with selling digital products earning a full time income and sometimes even 6 figures via digital product sales.

Samantha started off by creating recipe ebooks and now earns 6 figures a year from selling digital products

What made you decide to create this product?

A blog post about the same topic went viral and I received more than 300,000 Pinterest shares and over 100,000 page views in one day on Facebook. I listened to the comments of the readers and they all wanted to download it in PDF to make it easy to navigate around the different instant pot recipes. I then made it into an ebook and sold it from the original blog post which still gets more than 1 million page views a year.

How did you go about promoting it?

I placed links in the blog post, promoted it in my emails, my affiliates promote it and I also promote it via relevant related blog posts. It is also used in some of my tripwires too. Because I am using existing traffic to generate sales there has never been any paid promotions.

How much do you make from selling digital products now?

I generate six figures from my courses and my ebooks. What I love about 101 instant pot recipes for beginners is that is a simple concept that solves the reader’s problem and is our best selling out of our ebooks. It also helps sell our instant pot course because people buy this first and then upgrade.

Any tips for someone just starting selling digital products?

Start simple with a great product and a simple service like Sendowl. Even though I have courses I don’t use Teachable and run it all through Sendowl and my own blog.

Kate makes 50% of her blogging income from selling digital products like affirmation cards.

What made you decide to create this product?

I felt like empowering moms. Using positive affirmations changed my entire life. They helped me to be confident and love myself, so I wanted to do the same thing for other moms to empower them at every stage of their journey.

How did you go about promoting it?

I promoted it on my own site, along with email lists, mentioning it in my blog posts and on social media. I also have a small affiliate program to help as well. I have some on Etsy as well.

How much do you make from selling digital products now?

My digital products have helped me pay for my blogging expenses and makes up about 50% of my blogging income.

Any tips for someone just starting selling digital products?

Just do it! It is scary and you worry if people will buy and accept it. But, it is so worth it. You never know who you will bless with your products, so just do it!

Melissa earns 6 figures from running her online course about podcasting

What made you decide to create this product?

I’d hosted and produced a few of my own podcasts, but I saw how intimidated a lot of new hosts felt by the technology and podcasting processes. On top of that, I felt like most podcasting advice out there wasn’t speaking directly to online business owners like me, and the strategies I’ve used to build my podcast (and my course business) were way different from what all the “gurus” were talking about.

But more than anything, I really love to teach. I taught in-person classes at General Assembly NYC for years before producing Teachable’s in-house training programs for creators. I felt really inspired seeing the diversity of courses that business owners created during my four years at Teachable, and I always knew that my next step would be to start a course business of my own.

How did you go about promoting it?

I pay for ads and have always sold best from masterclasses. (The kind where you actually learn something, not a giant sales pitch.) I used to run live webinars a few times per year, but now most of my course sales come from paid ads, podcast appearances, and student referrals.

I’ll also add that Pinterest is my #1 source of organic traffic. Bloggers have loved Pinterest for years, and I think more podcast hosts could adapt their strategies to build their podcasts (and businesses).

I run a 6-figure online course business teaching women how to launch and grow podcasts. Courses are my primary income stream, and I’m actually trying to stop my 1:1 services completely to focus on my programs. (Almost there!)

Any tips for someone just starting selling digital products?

I’d recommend selling a live workshop first instead of getting hung up on the tech and perfectionism that can come with creating a pre-recorded online course.

After working at Teachable for 4 years, I know that recording video is one of the biggest blockers that stop people from ever starting their online course, and that’s why I think delivering a live workshop is so great. No one will expect you to be perfect, plus it’s a great way to validate demand for your topic before you sink too much time into a course that won’t sell. You’ll also get immediate feedback and questions from your first students, which can help you shape the curriculum and turn it into a proper self-paced online course as phase 2.

Kate only launched her blog 4 months ago but is already making money with digital products

What made you decide to create this product?

I want to promote Scotland as a sustainable destination, so the website I have offers a combination of travel consultancy services, a blog section and digital products. At the moment, there are just 2 ebooks, but I’m planning to have more. I want to have an online business and digital products are part of my strategy

I run FB and Pinterest ads

I started the website in April 2021 and 1st product launched in June 2021 and 2nd in mid of July 2021. So there is no many sales, so far 10 in total but I’m positive that with reopening the borders and travelling made easier, there will be more. I hope at least!

Test the water first. I asked people in the FB group if they are interested and offered freebie first, then digital products.

What made you decide to create this product?

When I wanted to become a freelance writer, I felt so intimidated as I had no experience or contacts in the industry. Over the years I learned short cuts and tricks to help me secure well-paying clients. I want to share these tips so others can earn money from their freelance writing, even if they have no experience too!

How did you go about promoting it?

Firstly I created a lot of interest and curiosity on my Instagram (I have a small but very engaged list ). I made over USD2,500 during launch day from Instagram and I have less than 5,000 IG followers!

I then promoted it on my own site, set up sales pages and also introduced it to my email list.

How much do you make from selling digital products now?

I created my first digital product in April 2021 and have made around $7.2k in 3 months. I know I could do so much better as I haven’t even looked at email funnels , trip wires or embedded the product in relevant blog posts! One step at a time.

Any tips for someone just starting selling digital products?

• Use templates to help you overcome imposter syndrome. I used sales page templates from Bluechic.
• Don’t be afraid to take a digital products course which teaches you step by step what to do exactly so you won’t spend ages fumbling around blindly.
• Be ok and accept that your first product may be imperfect but the only way is up! Start even if you are scared and it isn’t perfect.

Stacey recently started selling homemaking printables on Etsy and has recently opened a printable shop.

What made you decide to create this product?

I started to make my homemaking bundles as a tripwire, but then decided to sell them in my shop.

How did you go about promoting it?

I have a few different printables in my Bloomingful Peach and Food Safety Superhero printable shops on Etsy.

How much do you make from selling digital products now?

$95 this year. Only 1 item from my store and everything else was from Etsy. I just opened my printable shop in April.

Any tips for someone just starting selling digital products?

Never be discouraged and to create something you would use.

Dee runs a counselling business and makes 20% of her full-time income from selling mental health printables on Etsy.

What made you decide to create this product?

We’re counsellors and we created downloads, zines and cuddle buttons for children with all our best tips and strategies which we use with all our clients in our private practice on a day to day basis. People love to learn how to manage their own mental health and feel happier.

How did you go about promoting it?

For now, we sell our products mostly on Etsy and via our own email list. We’ve used Etsy and Facebook ads previously to drive sales.

Counselling face to face always comes first for us (especially at the moment) so it only accounts for around 20% of our income. However, we really want to increase that this year with more downloads and physical products launching soon. Exciting times!

Just go for it! You can learn how to produce and launch just about anything by watching YouTube videos and tutorials

Pelagia and Mary just lanched their first recipe ebook

What made you decide to create this product?

Most people know the standard Greek meals like moussaka and souvlaki but they miss out on so many other Greek recipes! And those are plant-based recipes which not only are healthy but also delicious and with affordable ingredients! As a Greek vegan, I decided to “fix” this omission with my sister and create our first digital cookbook with traditional Greek vegan recipes from all around Greece! In our upcoming e-cookbook, “Eat Like A Greek Vegan”, you’ll discover 45 delicious Greek recipes from the comfort of your home! Those recipes are either plant-based from the beginning or have been veganized (like for instance pita gyros with oyster mushrooms or moussaka)

And of course, don’t forget that you don’t need to be a vegan to enjoy vegan recipes!

How did you go about promoting it?

This is our first digital product and it’s currently on pre-sale. During Pre-sale Phase I, we promoted it in the following ways

• Through a Quiz
• On social media (FB, IG, Pinterest)
• Paid a few ads for the quiz and the ecookbook

It’s our first-ever digital product and it’s still in the pre-launch phase so we don’t yet have solid numbers!

Any tips for someone just starting selling digital products?

Apart from the product quality, I’d say the next most important thing is the promotion/marketing.

Having your digital products exposed to as many people as possible is key for me.

Angela makes around $3000 a month selling ebooks in the design space

What made you decide to create this product?

I wanted to create an eBook that helped women harness their creative skills and put it to use. A lot of women struggle to create due to multiple creative blocks like fear of imperfection or rejection or more. This ebook aims to help women rediscover that passion and create so that they can make a living doing what they love.

How did you go about promoting it?

I use only my email list and blog to promote my eBook.

How much do you make from selling digital products now?

I make about $3K per month via my eBooks. They make up about 60-70% of my income.

Any tips for someone just starting selling digital products?

Build an email list full of loyal readers that are super interested in the niche you’re blogging in. It becomes super easy to create and sell a product to an eager audience.

Tools to bring your own digital product ideas to life…

• To create your digital products, I recommend using Canva for creating templates or printables. For online courses or workshops, Podia is my go-to platform. Teachable is also worth looking at.

• For stock photos for your products, check out Styled Stock Society, Ivory Mix, Pixistock or search for stock photo deals on Appsumo

• For creating photo presets, check out Lightroom

• For selling your digital products I recommend either Sendowl or Thrivecart. Sendowl is perfect for beginners dipping their toe into selling digital products with 1 or 2 low cost printables. Thrivecart is a more robust platform for anyone selling multiple products, higher ticket products or who wants to run a successful affiliate program. The upsell features can also help you make more money per transaction. It’s a one-off fee so will work out cheaper in the long run.

• For building an email list, I cannot rave about Convertkit enough. It was a gamechanger for me. Flodesk and Mailerlite are alternatives if you have a really tight budget.

• For adding urgency to evergreen sales (to increase conversion rates,) check out Deadline Funnel or Thrive Ultimatum.

• For displaying personalised messages to grow your list or promote your products, I highly recommend Convertbox which may seem like a bit of a splurge but which, for me, has paid for itself many times over!
