It’s no secret that I love Convertbox.

It’s one of those tools that I keep finding more and more ways to use it and I’m sure I’ll be adding more creative ways to use Convertbox to this list over time.

I bought Convertbox with a goal in mind; to grow my email list faster.

But it has turned out to be SO much more than an email lead generation tool.

It has helped me in the following ways so far…

  • To grow my list (obvs)
  • To promote my own digital products
  • To make money via affiliate marketing.
  • To avoid abandoned carts inside my cart checkout.
  • To keep my course students engaged and get testimonials/feedback/recruit affiliates

But before I get completely carried away by how excited I am by this shiney new blogging tool, let’s start with the basics for those who are wondering ‘what even IS Convertbox?’

Firstly, it is NOT Convertkit. That’s an email marketing platform, Convertbox is not.

Yes, they sound similar. No, they are not related. However, they do work together very nicely but more on that later…

So, What is Convertbox?

The simple answer is that Convertbox is a tool that allows you to deliver personalised notifications to your readers, collecting emails or promoting products.

But it is SO much more!

Firstly, whilst some pop-ups can be annoying and, well… ugly, Convertbox couldn’t be further from that.

Their pop up boxes are actually cute and they fit seamlessly with your own branding. You also have so much control over when they appear and to whom.

See the magic with Convertbox is that it communicates directly with your email marketing platform exchanging snippets of info about your readers and subscribers such as what topics and products they are interested in and which pages they have previously visited.

This means that you can display different offers and messages to each reader depending on where they are in their journey with you.

Let me give you some examples;

Matthew discovered your site on Pinterest. He’s enjoyed reading your article but his dinner is just about ready so he goes to exit your site before he heads to the kitchen. Convertbox realises he’s about to exit and that he has no way to find his way back to your site again. So before he leaves for good, a pop-up notification with a freebie related to the topic he has been reading about pops up. Matthew joins your email list and now regularly returns to your site

Sarah joined your email list a while ago. She signed up for your free vegan dessert recipe and got tagged as being interested in vegan food. You’ve just launched a vegan recipe ebook that you know Sarah will love. When Sarah returns to your site for another recipe you mentioned in your email newsletter, she gets a pop-up promoting the ebook with a special timed discount if she purchases today instead of the lead magnet. It’s a no-brainer for Sarah – she knows your recipes are delicious so she grabs the offer and becomes a paying customer.

Claire discovered your photography blog a while back because she had just purchased a new camera. She’s been on your email list ever since and she even purchased your ebook about landscape photography. She’s back on your site right now, reading an article about taking epic sunrise photos. Anyone else might get offered the ebook but Convertbox knows that she already has this as she has the tag ‘purchased landscape ebook’ in your email marketing platform. So instead, Claire gets presented with a Convertbox promoting your full photography e-course. Not only that but as she’s a customer already, she gets reminded of her customer discount code. Claire purchases the course and becomes an awesome photographer.

You can currently determine which offer gets shown to someone based on

  • What tags they have or don’t have in your email marketing platform (this may be groups or segments on some platforms.)
  • How many times they visited a page
  • How many times they visited your site
  • If they have or have not visited a specific page before.
  • What device they are using.
  • What the referral source was e.g Facebook
  • Where they are currently based
  • Whether they have previously seen a Convertbox or not.

You can also choose how to display your messages. I like the Callout modal boxes best ( like little notifications which pop up discreetly at the side of a page without obscuring the text.) But there is also the option to use sticky bars, full-page, centre modal and inline forms. You can try them all out and see what converts best for you!

See how powerful Convertbox can be?

And we’re only just getting started. I’m going to show you plenty of creative ways you can use it to get

  1. More subscribers
  2. More money
  3. More happy customers willing to rave about your products

(Whilst many of these ideas are focused on promoting your own digital products, there are also ways that you can use Convertbox just for list growth and affiliate marketing purposes. Hopefully, there will be ideas to suit everyone here!)

Ok, let’s go…

21 Creative ways to use Convertbox for more leads and sales

1) Showcase lead magnets and content upgrades

If someone is new to your site or not yet a subscriber, your main focus should be getting them to join your newsletter so you have the opportunity to nurture that relationship. Otherwise, they may leave and never find their way back to your blog.

The most obvious way to use Convertbox is to display freebies as lead magnets.

For example, I have an article that is a case study where I went all-in with HARO to gain backlinks to my site. My content upgrade is a HARO pitch template. It gets crazy high uptake because it helps solve a very specific problem for my readers.

2. Let your reader choose their own freebie.

Say you have two lead magnets for one topic but one is more suited to beginners and the other for a more advanced crowd. But you have an article which may attract both types of readers.

You can create a Convertbox with 2 buttons. The button they click determines which lead magnet gets shown to them.

For example, I have two affiliate marketing lead magnets

So I could ask

  1. A beginners affiliate marketing course
  2. A list of the best high ticket affiliate programs in all niches.

‘Which of these is you?’

  1. No one is clicking my affiliate links – I need help!
  2. My strategies fine but I struggle to find the right programs

3. Reader navigation

Help your new readers navigate your website when they reach your homepage. Ask them what they are interested in learning and use the buttons they click to navigate them around your site.

(Yep the penguin made an appearance again – but hey he’s cute, right?!)

4. Create a quiz to get email subscribers

Who can resist a quiz?!

Quizzes are a great way to grow your email list partly because they get crazy high conversion rates but also because every answer your reader submits is giving Convertbox an opportunity to learn about their interests.

You can even add multiple tags to your new subscriber based on their answers to a variety of questions. Many quiz tools allow you to segment your audience by their result but Convertbox takes it a step further and lets you segment your subscriber by every single answer they give! Clever, right?!

5. Create a quiz to guide someone’s purchase decisions

Creating affiliate quizzes is one of my favourite creative ways to use Convertbox.

(This method can work for both your own products but also for affiliate products too.)

Sometimes people feel overwhelmed with various product options. You can help narrow their options by asking a few questions which will enable you to make a personalised recommendation.

For example, I have a quiz called ‘which email marketing platform is right for you?’ And each answer links to a different platform for which I am an affiliate.

You could also do a quiz to help someone decided if they are a good fit for a product you are launching!

6. To promote affiliate products

I like to use Convertboxes that link to specific pages with my affiliate links. For example, on my travel site I have articles reviewing travel companies and then a pop-up box that recommends checking out their Covid policy or linking to their special offers page.

I have been tracking conversion on one page, in particular, using this method. I know in the past couple of months, this one article alone generated an extra $500 affiliate commission.

I am also able to A/B test them against each other! Cn you guess which is performing best?! Answers in the comments!

7. To promote affiliate bonuses.

When there are a lot of affiliates promoting the same product, it can feel difficult to get your affiliate links seen.

To stay competitive, it may be worth considering offering some kind of bonus. Bonuses help to ‘sweeten the deal’ and get your readers across the line. They also help to make sure that they use your links and not someone else’s.

I like to promote my bonuses by creating a bonus page and then linking to it from a Convertbox on relevant articles.

8. To promote special offers for affiliate products

During sales periods or product launches, I like to promote my affiliate links in Convertboxes with timers that count down to the sale ending.

For example, the Genius Bloggers Toolkit will be available for a 5-day window coming up soon and I already have my Convertboxes scheduled in advance!

9. To promote your own launches and flash sales

Another great use for the count down timers! Use banners on your site during a launch promoting your time-sensitive discounts or bonuses.

You could try testing using a different Convertbox for people who have already visited the sales page like a new bonus product.

10. To set up tripwires/ one time only offers

Convertbox allows you to set a rule that when a timer reaches zero, the reader gets redirected to a new page.

This allows you to use Convertbox to create tripwire pages.

Tripwire pages are thank you pages with time-limited offers that usually expire after 15-30 minutes. New subscribers get redirected to these pages after submitting the form to subscribe.

11. To avoid cart abandonment

Many Convertbox users do not realise that they can use Convertbox on other tools and pages such as your cart processor. And there are actually so many creative ways to use Convertbox this way!

I use Convertbox with Thrivecart to reduce the number of abandoned carts.

When someone is showing exit intent, I have a Convertbox pop up with a video giving them a behind-the-scenes look at the product. This is to try to re-engage the potential customer and convince them that the product is right for them.

12. To downsell products

Sometimes customers will abandon a cart because they cannot justify spending the money. So you can try using exit intent pop-ups that promote a downsell (more affordable) product as a plan B.

They may come back to buy your other product at some point when they are in a financial position. to do so or when they feel confident parting with their money on the basis your last product was so awesome!

13. To collect data about why someone didn’t purchase your product.

You could use your abandoned carts as an opportunity to gather information about WHY people are not proceeding to buy your product. You’ll be able to see how many people clicked each option in your Convertbox statistics.

You could redirect them to a freebie when they click on one of the options so at least you can get them on your email list. They might come back to purchase your product at another date when you have proven yourself to be trustworthy.

I have all 3 of these cart abandonment Convertboxes working in sync with each other. For example, the first time they abandon the cart, I try to re-engage them. The 2nd time they get offered a down-sell and the 3rd time, I gather information.

14. Use Convertboxes on your sales page to increase conversions

You could use Convertboxes to show a video walk-through or to highlight testimonials to increase sales page engagement.

15. Give special offers to return visitors

If someone keeps returning to your sales page, they might just need something a little extra to get them over the edge. Consider offering them a discount, bonus or some additional support.

You can select how many times they must have viewed the page before the Convertbox gets triggered.

16. Give loyalty discounts!

If someone has purchased a product from you previously give them a reason to do so again by offering them a loyalty discount.

You can set this to only show to those with a purchase tag inside your email marketing platform!

17. To upsell products inside your course platform

You can even show convert box messages on your course platform. This can be useful for a number of reasons but the obvious one is to upsell your other products.

Once someone has had a taste for your style of teaching, they will be more likely to purchase from you again.

So you can use Convertboxes to promote the next logical step for them to take. You can also consider offering them an existing customer discount

18. To gather testimonials and feedback on your products

Testimonials are powerful on sales pages and so you will want to recruit as many as possible. But it’s not always easy to ask people directly for their assistance and is much easier if you can automate it.

I have set up a testimonial survey form using Airtable. I can send my customers the link and they fill it in, indicating which product they are referring to. This automatically populates a spreadsheet and organises testimonials into folders for each product.

Currently, I link to this form in my course content and in follow up emails after someone purchases my course. However, with Convertbox, I can also show the testimonial form (or feedback form) to customers whilst they are actively engaged with my course material.

I’d recommend having a pop-up like this to show when someone has returned to the site repeatedly or when they access later lessons inside the course. (Yep, you can set the Convertboxes to show only when someone is inside a particular lesson by specifying an exact URL.)

You may also want to offer an incentive to complete the form like for example, a discount on your next product!

19. To recruit affiliates to promote your products

Some of the best affiliates for your digital products are on your email list already – they are your customers!

But sometimes they don’t realise you have an affiliate program. Convertboxes are a great way to let them know.

In general, it would be best to set this up to show when someone has had multiple sessions on your course as you know they are engaged and clearly enjoying your product.

20. To increase course engagement

You want to support your students to get the most from your courses and actually finish them. That way, they get results which means you get case studies and testimonials and happy customers raving about your superpowers!

You could consider using Convertboxes to remind your students of the take-home message and encourage them to take action like download a workbook.

21. to collect original data/research by asking a survey question.

Conducting original research and then displaying it in a blog post is a good way to get backlinks to your blog as many bloggers are looking for statistics to support their content.

But getting the research isn’t always easy. But you could try using a Convertbox to gather information by asking 1 quick multiple-choice question. Alternatively, you could link to a full survey and offer an incentive for taking part!
